Science of Breath Part 2!

 

Intuitively, we’ve known for thousands of years that a conscious and intentional breath practice is good. We know by experience that softening into a relaxed breath can help with sleep, counting out 5 or 10 breaths can help soothe an emotional response, and maybe most importantly, we know that settling into a mindful breath practice can be a portal to the present moment.

These days, practices that ground us into the present moment are crucial. It’s in our moment-by-moment attending to the present that we can connect. This is the state of being where it’s easiest to drop into a sacred connection to the earth, to our bodies, and even to the possibility of a source of strength greater than the individual self.

Polyvagal Theory and other schools of thought are telling us just how important connection is to our physical and mental health. And the good news is, using intelligent breath practices, we can train our own nervous system to be primed for connection.

These days there is so much information available about breathing, the vagus nerve and heart rate variability that, in addition to our intuitive findings, we get to have a scientific rationale to more thoroughly understand the ‘why’ of a good breath practice. And how using the breath to settle the nervous system can impact health, well-being and even our important relationships.
