Leveraging Difficult Times for Mind, Body, and Spirit

I think a great many of us are in need of a survival kit on all levels during these times of high stress and adversity. This three part series is intended to be a self-care tool box for your body, mind, and spirit during the global pandemic. 

 

The concept of tensegrity was popularized by Buckmenster Fuller as a way to enable architecture to “do more with less.” His vision was to utilize a combination of tension and compression forces in such a way that the structure is able to withstand more strain than with compression elements alone. Watch Fuller’s video explanation here. 

 

Biotensegrity (coined by Dr Stephen Levin) is a more recent development or extension of Fuller’s ideas in application to biological forms. Biotensegrity challenges us to use these fundamental teachings to further understand the human body and how we can unlock more of its potential. Personally, I like to take it one step further and state that these principles are also profoundly applicable to all levels of being human, including our mind and spirit: we can apply the concept of “energy tensegrity” to our life situation and balance our inner state of being.  

 

You can attend all three parts, or only one or two as you are able. Fee will be on a sliding scale, but full scholarships are also available if you have lost your income. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds.

Part One: Self-Care for the Body 

 

This workshop is designed to be a care package of tools and tips to take care of your body during stressful times.

 

In this 3-hour workshop you will learn: 

 

  • Myofascial self-care strategies for relieving body tension or pain
  • Overview of myofascial release self-care techniques
  • Practical application of myofascial self-care tips to tide you over until you can get back to your regular massage or bodywork sessions
  • How we shape and hold the body in the world and in response to stress, threat, and danger 
  • Mindful movement practices to unlock holding patterns, release tension and free fascial restrictions 
  • Mindful strengthening practices: simple, gentle movement strategies for supporting the body during times of stress
  • Overview of biotensegrity principles 
  • How to apply the principles of biotensegrity to your favorite mindfulness-based movement practice 

 

Both the PowerPoint presentation and movement practice session will be recorded. You are welcome to return often to these practices for a regular mindful self-care regimen.

Part two: Self-Care for the Mind

 

This workshop is geared toward leveraging stressful situations to strengthen your mind, brain, and nervous system’s resilience and adaptability to life challenges

 

In this 3-hour workshop you will learn: 

 

  • What is the fascia system / nervous system interface?
  • How does the nervous system state affect tissue tone?
  • How to apply nervous system regulation strategies to release chronic tension patterns
  • Mindfulness-based meditation practice for resourcing the nervous system 
  • How to apply the “story follows state” idea from polyvagal theory to your daily life situations 
  • Overview of neural plasticity and how to use it for positive growth 
  • Compare and contrast different styles of meditation 
  • Q and A discussion for choosing the right meditation practice for your unique needs

Part Three: Self-Care for the Spirit 

 

In this workshop we will leverage challenging times for the purpose of spiritual development and evolution. 

 

In this 3-hour workshop you will learn: 

 

  • How to use adversity to develop and evolve your spiritual practice 
  • How to make use of stress in positive and growth-promoting ways
  • How to use the concept of tensegrity energetically 
  • How to use external loads to strengthen your essential self 
  • How the places that get stuck in our body translate to places we get stuck in our lives, and how to get gently unstuck
  • Overview of the principles of continuity 
  • Practical application of continuity in our day-to-day lives 
  • Harnessing the power of gentleness in times of stress 
  • Tapping into an unlimited source of strength and resilience 
  • Definition of an integrated awakening and how to approach it mindfully 
  • The role of relationships in spiritual evolution
